Abilene History... in Plain Sight

A video series by Jay Moore... available on DVD and cablecast on AISD TV Abilene Suddenlink Channel 7

The Bankhead Highway
Episode 2:
Who Is That Street?

The first video traces the route and history of what became US Highway 80 and laterInterstate 20... one of the great American cross-country highways, and an important contributor to Abilene's development. Surprising insights about how the highway came to be are uncovered by Abilene historian Jay Moore, who wrote and directed the series. Shot and edited by Rob Westman.

Who Is That Street answers many questions about the streets we drive every day in Abilene... Willis... Barrow... and many more. Who were these people? What did they contribute to Abilene's development?

History In Plain Sight series is presented with the support of a grant from the Dian Graves Owen Foundation of Abilene. The Abilene Preservation League proudly serves as fiscal sponsor of the series.

Would you like APL to talk to your club or group?

The Abilene Preservation League has a presentation designed for luncheon groups, neighborhood associations and practically any group that is interested in Abilene history. We would love to come show it to your group. It runs about 20 minutes, but can be expanded or otherwise tailored to your group's needs. To schedule a visit, send us an email.

From time to time there are buildings we would like to highlight because of their value to the community as examples of good architecture or their context in our city's history. Sometimes the owner has asked us to help find out more about the building's history. Sometimes there is a threat of the property being demolished or lost to neglect. We believe a public discussion of the value of an older building is helpful to the economic development of the community. Check this site occasionally for listings.

We have moved the historic building listings to their own page.
